Surrogates Shouldn't Matter

As we have seen from our readings this week surrogates and endorsements are an important part of the political process. However, overall I don’t think candidates gain or lose much from their endorsements, due to the positive and negative aspects, other than the funds they may donate. There are people who have a positive impact on the political sphere like Bill Clinton, whose support for President Obama was recognized as a huge bonus for the Obama campaign. “The passion of President Clinton–his unique perspective and intellect–puts the strengths and accomplishments of the last four years into perspective,” said Christian Hylton, delegate from New York. But then there are the negative endorsements like Eva Longoria who means well but made a mistake which further fueled a ‘war on women’. In the overall scope of things they aren’t the candidates so I don’t think anything they say or do should impact the voter’s decision. If they would like to voice their opinion then feel free but should any one regular citizens opinion really matter?

  1. I would have to disagree with you on this post. I think that especially in today's tech savvy, social media hyped society, many people look to celebrities and other well known people to see where they stand on the political spectrum. I actually think that what celebrities post on twitter about candidates is how many people get a lot of their political information. I don't necessarily think it is a bad thing, just a different way of looking at the election. While it may not be the "best" option, it's better than people going to the polls to vote without any information whatsoever. While I think it is important to have a well rounded understanding of the candidates running and not just look to their surrogates, l think surrogates are here to stay.

  2. I have to disagree as well. I can see that you're trying to point out the theory that it would be ideal if voter's didn't focus on image so much, but I think that many image voters do exist. For example and in relation to Alanna's post, if someone views Eva Longoria's negative tweet as a direct reflection of Obama then they might not vote for Obama because of this. I wish that voting didn't get based on such things, but I believe it does.
